2 Emo collides.. watch who wins as the more Emo. LOL

There are many facets to emo culture; it is not easily placed in a box with a neat and tidy label. That said, many of the culture’s unifying characteristics can be seen in various forms of pop culture, including cinema. While there are no definitive emo movies, there are quite a few that appeal to many people in the subculture. We’ll explore these movies and why they are so relevant to the people in the subculture.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: The movie tells an out-of-order love story about a couple, Clementine and Joel, who have decided to undergo a procedure to have each other, and their relationship, erased from their memories after a fight. Admittedly, the movie walks the line of being a “chick flick,” but it’s so well done, and the acting from Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey put it on the other side of the fence — in the cool movie category. So how does this make it an emo movie?

Simple.

Pretty much every girl who is invested in emo culture either:

– Completely relates to Clementine

– Wants to be Clementine

– Thinks she is Clementine

– All of the above.

Pretty In Pink: This John Hughes classic 80s movie was emo before emo even existed. (Note: You’ll find many movies on this list fall into this category.) The movie is about a couple of new wave misfits who were thrust into a world of rich, preppy kids. They’re struggling to survive high school, and love. It starts Molly Ringwald, 80s female emo icon for her body of work portraying a teenage girl having a hard time. It also stars John Cusack as Duckie Dale, who is pretty much every girl in the emo scene’s dream boy.

That said, everybody in the world who is remotely emo is driven mad by the ending of this movie.

Which brings us to…

Some Kind of Wonderful: Also done by John Hughes, this movie features Eric Stoltz as a guy from “the wrong side of the tracks” who wants to be an artist, despite pressures from his father to go to a good college so he can rise above his blue collar roots. To further complicate things, he’s in love with a rich, popular girl, and his tomboy best friend is in love with him.

It’s not as good as Pretty In Pink, but it is universally agreed that overall, it is more satisfying for the emo types of the world.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: An animated Christmas movie? Really? That’s an emo movie? Have you ever looked at the arms of most of the scene’s rock stars? Full sleeves of artwork from the movie, which, incidentally, is more of a Halloween movie than a Christmas movie. Plus, it was conceived and directed by Tim Burton — the ultimate emo filmmaker — and has music by Danny Elfman. It’s a gorgeous movie full of cute emo monsters, Jack Skellington, and Sally’s awkwardly stalkerish love for him. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Say Anything: Could anyone make a list of emo movies and not include a movie that inspired the name of the band Say Anything? That inspired songs by myriad bands including Fall Out Boy and Pencey Prep? Lloyd Dobler is so emo, it hurts. When John Cusack says the infamous line, “I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen…” you know that dude is feeling something emotional. He may have horrible taste in music (I’ll bet you when Hollywood gets around to remaking it, a better song comes out of that boombox, which will probably be an iPod with speakers attached) — but there’s no mistaking him for anything but what he is. And that’s the “e word.”

Ghost World: One look at the black haired, pouting, thick black glasses-wearing Thora Birch — who may well be at her hottest ever in this movie and you know it belongs on this list. A maladjusted, depressed girl forced into summer school art classes forges a relationship with an awkward older man, played by Steve Buscemi… only to lose everything before she can actually find herself. Few movies portray teen angst and the alienation so many alternative-type girls feel so well. Bonus points go to this one for being an adaptation of the Daniel Clowes comic.

Velvet Goldmine: The movie may be loosely based on David Bowie and Iggy Pop, and set in the 1970s glam rock scene, but you get Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Myers kissing. While wearing a bunch of makeup. You tell me there’s a more emo movie, and I’ll eat my hat. It also features an extremely awkward Christian Bale as a sexually confused runaway who desperately wants to fit in, but just doesn’t. You end up rooting for him, as well as for the rock stars as the story unfolds, because deep down, you relate to his loneliness and awkwardness in the face of people who seem so much larger than life.

There are plenty of other movies that could qualify as emo movies, but these are some of the greatest. Haven’t seen them? Head to your local video store or add them to your Netflix. Seen them? Well, it’s time to watch them again… and see what I’m talking about, and just how much they have impacted modern culture.

Fans and even the bands themselves are divided over what this underground type of innovative rock music should be labeled. The terms indie rock and emo core have both been used almost interchangeably to identify this style of music. The term indie rock, however, is commonly used to describe the broad category of non-mainstream rock music, which encompasses many different styles. The word indie is actually short for independent, and is used because the bands are typically not on major record labels. Rather, they are on independent ones or not signed at all.

Emo, or emo core, stems from hardcore punk, according to numerous sources such as the All Music Guide, indie-rock-music.net, numerous band interviews and fans in general. The word emo is actually just short for emotion.

Characteristics of this style include dynamic shifts in tempo and velocity, atypical song structures, intricate guitar playing, and deeply emotional lyrics. Unlike punk, which is typically raw and somewhat angry sounding, emo tends to have melodic vocals and poppy guitar riffs. Emo still maintains elements of punk in the drum beats, the energetic tempo and somewhat in the guitar riffs, but mainly in the anti-commercial attitudes. Some emo bands sound almost exactly like punk with the exception of the vocals–while punk lyrics are about social and political themes, emo lyrics are about personal introspection and emotional release.

So, this genre of music is supposed to be emotional hardcore . Problem in saying that, as pointed out by Nathaniel Kingsley of indie-rock-music.net, is that it sounds as if emo is the only kind of music that expresses emotion. It’s safe to say that all music is driven by emotion. Kingsley points out that “…although emo slightly distinguishes itself, all of these sub genres are phony and only connote the fan’s insecurity about liking music that other people like and be considered popular. By creating these sub-genres like indie rock, emo, independent music, screamo, and the like, they are creating a niche for themselves.” What makes it more difficult is the question of when an indie band becomes a national recording artist, are they still “indie”?

The name emo seems to annoy some bands that receive the label. The Promise Ring, a prominent band in the emo/indie realm of poppy rock, resents the label emo because it’s used for many bands that don’t sound alike. Jason Gnewikow, The Promise Ring guitarist, raised the point in an interview with Aversion.com that The Get Up Kids and Fugazi are both labeled emo, even though they sound nothing alike.

Recent development in the EMO cultural movement on the Internet platform is an early indication of how EMO will rule in 2009. Flicking through the autumn glossy fashion magazines, I noticed that some of the models did not look very well.

A few of them appeared to be dead. This is because one of the key looks, especially at the younger end of the fashion spectrum, is Goth.

Faces are chalky white, eyes and lips black. You can wear any colour you like so long as it’s black.

To achieve that just-got-out-of-acoffin look, you need corsets, capes, Celtic crosses, an unseeing stare and a prop such as a slightly mutilated china doll dragged along in one hand.

For those of us who have lived through Siouxsie And The Banshees and the Rocky Horror Show, the look is depressingly retro.

Fashion acknowledges those of us who lived through it first time round – Elder Goths, as opposed to Baby Bats, who are the under-30s.

It even nods to a working population, permitting Corporate Goths, who wear black trouser suits.

There is a also a term which is new to me and amounts to a much more dangerous teenage cult.

The Emos – short for Emotional – regard themselves as a cool, young sub-set of the Goths.

Although the look is similar, the point of distinction, frightening for schools and parents, is a celebration of self harm.

Emos exchange competitive messages on their teenage websites about the scars on their wrists and how best to display them. Girls’ secondary schools have for some time been concerned about the increase in self harm.

One governor of a famous boarding school told me that it was as serious a problem as binge drinking, but rarely discussed for fear of encouraging more girls to do it.

Although it is invariably described as a ’secret shame’, there is actually a streak of exhibitionism about it.

The internet has many sites dedicated to Emo fashion (dyed black hair brushed over your face, layering, black, black, black), Emo bands (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), Emo conversation (sighing, wailing, poetry).

The Instant Emo Kit site gives advice on identity. Wear a child’s T-shirt with a slogan such as ‘Unhappy Chick’ and drive a Vespa. Above all, ’show your inner despair by looking like you are too sad to eat. Obesity and emocity do not mix.’

Adult Goths refer to the Emos disdainfully as ‘the spooky kids’ or ‘moshers’.

The Emo song, by the American band Adam And Andrew, has cult status on the internet, appearing on many personal websites. It is called Dear Diary and is both witty and alarming.

The chorus goes: ‘Stop my breathing and slit my throat, I must be an Emo.

I don’t jump around when I go to shows, I must be an Emo.

Dye in my hair and polish on my toes, I must be an Emo. I play guitar and write suicide notes, I must be an Emo.’

The courting of misery and death is a long-established teenage tradition. How many bedroom walls have been plastered with posters of drippy pre-Raphaelite heroines, or Marc Bolan or Kurt Curbain?

When death is a long way off, you can afford to be more morbid about it.

Film-makers note that horror films are now more popular than romance among young women.

In particular, Goths and Emos are a rebellion against sporty, manly cultures – which is perhaps why they flourish particularly in North European countries or North America.

The androgynous nature of the Goths is appealing to the young because it is sexually unthreatening.

Teenage girls are frightened of manliness: they like boys who look like girls. Kate Moss, the girl who never grows old, understands youthful taste completely.

There is also a deadly glamour about the Goths. The word femme-fatale is Goth based.

Many of the alluring women of our time – Nigella Lawson, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Lily Allen – have a touch of the Goth about them.

They have a sophistication and depth lacking in the blonde, bouncy chav faces which dominate our television screens and nightclubs.

Who are the male pin-ups for young girls? Johnny Depp and the comedian Russell Brand, who is about 90 per cent Goth. Lord Byron, of course, was the greatest Goth of all time.

Emos have a strong arts graduate bias and are among the few that read poetry (if only of the romantic, morbid kind).

Some pretty terrible Emo poetry is offered on websites. A cartoon of two Emos has a bubble which says: ‘What rhymes with razor blade?’

But compared to the music, the poetry is positively cheerful. The Gothic bands have names such as Bloody, Dead And Sexy or Colder Than Death.

There is a genre, popular in Germany, known as Death Pop. Bands include The Knives In The Attic and Love Equals Death.

Although Goths are from the same family tree as punks, they are a lot less fun to be with. While I loved punk for its energy, Goths were too bloodless to lift a finger.

One of the most annoying characteristics of teenagers is their refusal to open their curtains. Their world is dark and airless.

If this environment is coupled with the psychological traits of self-pity, introspection, self-dramatisation and hormone imbalance, you have a fully-fledged Emo, even without the small Tshirt and black hair.

The wondrous thing about being an adult is that you have so much more to worry about that you stop striking poses and get on with it.

Unless you are an Elder Goth – in which case you have fashion on your side and everybody else against you.

What worries me is that teenagers are less equipped to manage strong emotions and a cult of suicide could have real and horrible consequences.

It is irresponsible for the fashion and music cultures to encourage it. If you want retro style, I recommend Ian Dury’s song Reasons To Be Cheerful.
